Driving community engagement: A conversation with Martina Lee Strickland

This week on Catalyst, Tammy is joined by Martina Lee Strickland, Chief Growth Officer at Clever Care Health Plan, a healthcare company that provides culturally sensitive Medicare options. Martina’s career spans small startups and Fortune 100 companies, which gives her a unique perspective and a passion for people. Tammy and Martina discuss personal branding, community engagement and the potential challenges of using technology, particularly AI, in healthcare.
Highlights from the episode include:
- Leadership means listening and executing. Creating a safe, open environment starts with over-communicating your intentions and following through. When team members see their input leads to real action, that builds trust and enhances your reputation as a leader.
- Technology is only effective if the user is ready for it. In healthcare, especially with populations like Medicare members, it’s critical to understand how comfortable people are with AI and mobile tools. Rolling out new tech without that sensitivity risks missing the mark on engagement and impact.
- AI can flip the script by designing for the underserved. Most digital products target the mainstream, often leaving out users with diverse needs. Generative AI and voice-based agents offer a chance to build inclusive tools for communities who’ve been overlooked, such as the elderly and caregivers.
