Combining technology and creativity in an AI world: A conversation with Leslie Shannon

In this episode of Catalyst, Tammy is joined by Leslie Shannon, Head of Trend and Innovation Scouting at Nokia. Leslie blends tech expertise with an art historian’s perspective and has a long career of spotting the future before it happens. Tammy and Leslie explore virtual natives, reimaging reality in the digital realm and how AI might help us think more creatively, not less.
Highlights from the episode include:
- The virtual world is real. Leslie challenges the notion that digital interactions are somehow less authentic than physical ones. Whether connecting through gaming, working remotely or building relationships online, these experiences have genuine impact. She distinguishes between virtual and physical rather than virtual and real.
- Don’t replicate reality. Reimagine it. Building a digital version of a store aisle or office isn’t innovation. Leslie pushes for virtual spaces that offer something new: experiences that break free from the physical world instead of copying it.
- Gen Z is not waiting around. They don’t want to “go back to the office” and they’re not impressed by old-school systems. Raised online, this generation has never known the physical predecessors to digital tools. Unlike previous digital natives who used electronic copies of analog processes, virtual natives can envision completely new ways of doing things. They see through outdated systems and have the skills to build alternatives.
