In this episode of Catalyst, Tammy is joined by Alicia Graham, co-founder and COO of Claimable, a startup helping patients challenge health insurance denials. Alicia’s career has spanned marketing, economics, healthcare and experience design. Tammy and Alicia discuss building AI solutions that put humans first, healthcare advocacy and what the most disruptive companies have in common.

Highlights from the episode include:

  • Play, talk, read. When it comes to learning about new technology, Alicia’s approach is simple: read long-form, talk to people building things and then get your hands dirty. Curiosity and real-world insight separate armchair experts from people who truly get it.
  • The appeal of targeting appeals. Claimable focuses specifically on the appeals process because federal law requires qualified humans to review each case. This approach avoids the “AI bot versus AI bot war” and ensures real people with real cases get proper attention from insurance companies.
  • Human-centered team structure. Despite using AI extensively, Claimable employs appeal specialists, legal advisors and support staff who monitor outcomes and provide personalized help. The team combines deep healthcare industry experience with data science expertise to validate every new condition they support.
