Driving innovation: How technology transforms mobility beyond the wheel

Nearly half a century ago, vehicles with cassette players were the pinnacle of automotive luxury and innovation. Fast forward to today, and we have cars that can parallel park themselves, trucks that can single handedly launch boats, and even taxis that can drive all over town without a human at the wheel. These eye-popping features get the lion’s share of attention, but there are plenty of innovative life-enhancing features — like heads-up displays that make it easier to keep your eyes on the road, blind spot alerts for smoother lane changes, and forward collision warnings paired with automatic braking.

We may be driving the vehicles (well, most of the time), but technology is what’s driving mobility forward. This is nothing new — technology has been transforming transportation ever since key ignitions replaced hand cranks. Today, technology gives us a unique blend of safety, convenience, and just plain cool. For that last one, how else would you describe a social platform for the tight-knit off-roading Jeep community?

Mobility extends far beyond cars, though. Oxford English Dictionary defines it as “the ability to move or be moved freely and easily,” and it’s that last part where technology plays such a pivotal role. Moving — whether it’s moving us around town or moving products around the world — is an integral part of our personal and professional lives. For many companies, effective mobility can be the difference between a bottom-line boost and a bust.

Take Hyster-Yale’s robotic lift trucks as an example of mobility technology that’s transforming business. We’re thrilled to partner with them to help develop their automatic lift truck solutions. Yes, it’s an initiative that sounds futuristic and intriguing, but more importantly, it will help Hyster-Yale address labor and productivity challenges that have plagued the manufacturing industry since the pandemic.

Hyster-Yale is leveraging the power of cutting-edge mobility to reimagine its day-to-day operations, but they’re not a rare exception — this is a mindset that every enterprise can (and should) embrace.

Look no further than Epic Games, a company that transcended its video game roots to open up a variety of new revenue opportunities in the mobility sector. Their human-machine interface (HMI) tool for Unreal Engine gives automotive teams the power to safely conduct realistic tests to validate their ideas inside a custom 3D vehicle and environment, or simply share concepts for presentation purposes. The GMC Hummer EV’s near-instant adoption of this technology created a more immersive driving experience with graphics that display real-time data on everything from off-road pitch and roll angles to tire pressure, torque output, and more. Without this outside-the-box thinking, Epic Games might just be another video game company. They certainly wouldn’t be the topic of conversation amongst automotive aficionados.

The journey from the awe of cassette players to today’s technological marvels is not only a testament to the power of technology — but also to the power of companies that keep innovating new and different ways to drive mobility forward. It’s exciting to imagine what’s next. Better yet, be part of what’s next.
