Rivian is an electric vehicle manufacturer on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. In the company’s formative years, Launch helped Rivian envision, design, and prototype an in-vehicle Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and IoT system to showcase to investors.

Innovating adventure and gig work
Rivian wanted to explore new models, strategies, and business opportunities related to gig work and modern adventure. In the alpha prototype build out, we assessed hardware and software components leading to the development of an interactive demonstration and simulation of multiple screens for investor and user testing. This phase of work included live vehicle system data integration, car on-boarding experience, and UI design.

Developing customer storylines
To understand the needs and desires of unique user groups, we facilitated workshops to develop user storylines, personas, and storyboard interaction flows. Personas included gig workers dispatched to pick up and deliver packages in a work zone and adventurers exploring in the great outdoors.

Experience design for multiple journeys
This phase included concepting for cluster, dashboard, and infotainment displays, animated throughout multiple customer journeys from gig work to adventure.
Driving the future of mobility
Early assessments of the HMI prototype helped to clarify and focus Rivian’s strategy for future product development cycles. Through this work, Rivian successfully showcased functional designs integrated into first gen vehicles, with simulated capabilities that afforded an extended look at future possibilities. Investors and stakeholders got a powerful glimpse into the vehicle’s digital capabilities and value.

Going to market strong
Through this work, we helped Rivian drive their valuation, acquire more funding, and go to market with strength. Rivian attracted further investments from the likes of Amazon, Ford, and Cox Automotive, successfully raising $450 million as of q4 2018.
