In this episode of Catalyst, Tammy is joined by Deanna Steele, CIO for North America at Allied Universal. Deanna has been leading large-scale tech projects in the retail and consumer sectors for over 25 years. She brings a mix of technical and business knowledge and personal goals to every part of her work and life. Tammy and Deanna discuss leading and living with intention, seeking out truth-tellers and making time for joy.

Highlights from the episode include:

  • There is no magic book. Early in her career, Deanna asked a colleague where to find the “best practices” she kept hearing about. She learned there is no book and we make the rules up as we go.
  • Reverse mentoring is real. The higher up you go, the less feedback you get. Deanna and Tammy talk about the importance of cultivating honest relationships — especially with people earlier in their careers — to avoid blind spots.
  • The voice in your head needs management. Whether it’s a morning workout or a major initiative, learning to steer your mental monologue is key to progress. When in doubt, treat that inner critic like a toddler: thank it for its concern and move forward.
