Innovation isn’t just a startup thing. It’s vital for everyone — even the biggest of businesses.

But that doesn’t mean it’s an easy thing. This week on Catalyst, innovation and design strategist Trevor Anulewicz joins Clinton to unravel the complexities of managing innovation within enterprises. Check out the highlights below, then dive into the full episode to learn more about how to cultivate an innovation infrastructure that’s repeatable and scalable.

Be realistic

Don’t lie to yourself. Ground systematic innovation in reality rather than relying on "vaporware." In lean times, programs grounded in tangible, measurable results are more likely to survive and demonstrate value to the business.

Get familiar with Innovation OS

Yes, “OS,” like “operating system.” Because that’s really what you’re doing – operating your business from a point of innovation. Innovation OS includes components like strategy, management systems, communication, and infrastructure. These components are crucial for the success and impact of an innovation program within an organization.

Quantify ideas

There can be too much of a good thing. Juggling a ton of innovative ideas without a system in place is inefficient. Help prioritize and focus efforts by implementing a quantification and ranking system that scores and weighs ideas based on attributes and evidence. That will help get the really good ideas to market faster.

Measure success and KPIs

Key performance indicators (KPIs) for innovation programs are critical to measuring success. Consider factors such as time, effort, and the maturity of innovation initiatives.

Generate internal excitement

Make sure your team believes in the dream! You need to tell compelling stories, champion ideas, and use various communication methods, including videos, to engage and inform the people in your organization.

Don’t worry if it feels counterintuitive

Innovation programs often challenge established norms within enterprises, requiring a willingness to embrace change and potentially give up past practices to pursue future opportunities. Identifying and eliminating core business blinders and blockers is a big part of the process.

Tap into change agents

New ways of thinking often involve an entire culture shift. Change agents within organizations play a vital role in navigating challenges, partnering with leadership, and fostering a willingness to pursue future opportunities.
